My Top Ten characters On Sci-Fi Television (At The Moment): A picspam of my ten favorite sci-fi characters right now. This list isn't necessarily my all-time faves (as that's subject to change anyway) but these are the top ten that I could think up when I started this challenge for

01.
WHO: {Lost} Ben Linus
WHAT: Leader of The Others
WHY: Because even after murdering I-don't-know-how-many people I still see him as morally gray. His depth is amazing. He's manipulative, smart, and murderous but he's also an awkward boy with serious daddy issues. Michael Emerson makes Ben amoral, petty, vindictive, hysterical, and pitiable w/ease. The fact that one character can be so many things so seamlessly makes me love him.
Ben Linus: Those things had to happen to me. That was my destiny. But you'll understand soon enough that there are consequences to being chosen. Because destiny, John... is a fickle bitch.
02.
WHO: {Lost} John Locke
WHAT: Oceanic 815 survivor. Man of faith and so much more.
WHY: I had a love/hate relationship with Locke for parts of Lost. Ultimately I loved him because I think his journey was amazing (even when he wasn't so likable). He's like Ben with the daddy issues and wanting to be special but just when it looks like he is that special we find out that really, he was almost as much of a sad old man as people always thought he was. Terry O'Quinn played Locke's tragedy beautifully and I'm a sucker for tragedy.
John Locke: That's why you and I don't see eye-to-eye sometimes, Jack -- because you're a man of science.
Jack Shephard: Yeah, and what does that make you?
John Locke: Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this is an accident -- that we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence -- especially, this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.
Jack Shephard: Brought here? And who brought us here, John?
John Locke: The Island. The Island brought us here. This is no ordinary place, you've seen that, I know you have. But the Island chose you, too, Jack. It's destiny.
03.
WHO: {Star Trek: The Original Series} Spock
WHAT: First Officer and Science Officer aboard the USS Enterprise.
WHY: Because he's Spock? I love everything about him. From the emotions he tries so desperately to suppress to his love of logic to his 20 different versions of the eyebrow raise. I especially love his bickering relationship with Dr. McCoy and his BFFness with Captain Kirk. Spock makes oldschoool Trek for me.
Spock: Nowhere am I so desperately needed as among a shipload of illogical humans.
04.
WHO: {Star Trek: The Next Generation} Data
WHAT: Sentient android and Chief Operations Officer and Second Officer Aboard the USS Enterprise-D.
WHY: I was raised on TNG so Data is the character on this list that I've loved the longest. His attempts to be more human were an endless source of LOLs but there was a sadness about him as well. I always thought that he was perfect the way he was. One of my favorite TNG episodes is The Measure of a Man where Data is put on trial and it's proven that he's sentient/autonomous. Also, he has cat named Spot, which he wrote an awesome poem about.
Data: I am the culmination of one man's dream. This is not ego, or vanity. But when Dr. Soong created me, he added to the substance of the universe. If by your experiments I am destroyed, something unique, something wonderful will be lost. I cannot permit that. I must protect his dream.
05.
WHO: {Lost} Dr. Juliet Burke
WHAT: Fertility specialist brought to the island by The Others.
WHY: Because she's smart and awesome (she got a male mouse and her cancer stricken sister pregnant). She's snarky.
Richard Alpert: Why were you fine with those things? It seems like quite a leap for a job opportunity. I mean we're not paying you that much. I think you're fine because deep down a part of you knows that the place we're taking you to is special.
Juliet Burke: Special?
Richard Alpert: Let me ask you, Juliet. You took a woman. Your own sister. Whose reproductive system was ravaged by chemotherapy. Who was sterile. And you made her pregnant. You created life where life wasn't supposed to be. That's a gift, Juliet. You have a gift. And don't you think you're meant to do something significant with it? Where we're going, you can do just that.
Juliet Burke: Where exactly are we...
Richard Alpert: I can't tell you that. But what I can tell you is that, you'll see things there that you never imagined. Now, no-one is forcing you to do anything, so if you change your mind we're happy to take you back to...
06.
WHO: {Doctor Who 2005} The Doctor
WHAT: Alien from the planet Gallifrey who travels through time and space in a TARDIS (that looks like a police box).
WHY: I love him because he's fun! I mean, each version has his moments of emo-pants or rage but generally the doctor is just fun and quirky and wonderful.
The Doctor: People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff.
07.
WHO: {Re-Imagined Battle Star Galactica} Kara "Starbuck" Thrace
WHAT: BAMF Galactica viper pilot and eventual CAG.
WHY: I will never get over how much I loved Starbuck in Act of Contrition/You Can't Go Home Again. She's such a badass pilot and fighter but she's also so fucked up and broken inside. Even the times, later in the series, when I kind of couldn't stand her I loved her.
Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace: After the attack, I never... never pined over any of my old crap, never missed it - stupid view of that parking lot, broken toilet in the bathroom. You know, everyone I know is fighting to get back what they had. I'm fighting because I don't know how to do anything else.
08.
WHO: {Fringe} Walter Bishop
WHAT: Fringe Division Scientist
WHY: Because John Noble is amazing (and deserves every acting award ever). Walter is quirky and hysterically funny. He's insanely intelligent. His past is a bit morally questionable but you can't help but sympathize with him now. His relationship with his son Peter is incredibly touching. He makes me crack up every time he gets Astrid's name wrong or requests a special food item.
Walter Bishop: There is little that makes me happier than taking drugs. Perhaps administering them, designing and carrying out experiments that bend the plane of what we consider reality.
09.
WHO: {Firefly} Dr. Simon Tam
WHAT: Ex-rich genius and Doctor aboard Serenity
WHY: Someone from Firefly had to be on this list so I went with my favorite ATM. I love Simon's absolute dedication to his sister. He's smart, handsome, and has an awesomely dry sense of humor. I will be forever saddened that we didn't get to follow his character arch throughout years of show as I can only imagine how awesome it would have been.
Simon Tam: I am very smart. I went to the best Medacad in Osiris, top three percent of my class, finished my internship in eight months. "Gifted" is the term. So when I tell you that my little sister makes me look like an idiot child, I want you to understand my full meaning. River was more than gifted. She... she was a gift. Everything she did, music, math, theoretical physics - even-even dance - there was nothing that didn't come as naturally to her as breathing does to us. She could be a real... brat about it, too.
10.
WHO: {X-Files}
WHAT: FBI Special Agent
WHY: She's incredibly smart, skeptical, strong and funny. I think she was my first 'I can look up to this female heroine' character on TV and I'll always love her for that.
Scully: I have just been assigned to the Academy as a forensic investigator. For the past eight years I was part of a unit known as the X-Files. Some of you may have heard of it.
FBI Cadet: You ever slay a vampire?
Scully: Sorry to disappoint you, but this is a course in forensic pathology. Hard science. An X-File is a case that has been deemed unsolvable by the Bureau, because such a case cannot be solved it may beg other explanations... a vampire, perhaps. Science, however, tells us that evil comes not from monsters, but from men. It offers us the methodology to catch these men, and only after we have exhausted these methods should we leave science behind to consider more... extreme possibilities.
